For the mini project I decided to make a booklet, I am currently still working on this project but I have finished making both covers and I made the leaflets I just have to bind the book together. I used different patterned paper to create this to make it look unique and I cut a heart out and pasted it on either cover. I plan on using this booklet as a gift or a journal for myself.
I liked this picture from the art show since they incorporated their art into something that I would never have thought of. I really liked how this person used their art and something they didn't create to make their final piece. At first when I sad it I was confused because I thought they were real doughnut holes falling out of the box but then I walked up to the piece and realized it was clay. I don't think I would change anything about it because I was absolutely amazed by the piece. They used clay as their medium and then incorporated the doughnut box to complete the art piece.
I believe that the art criticism process starts with choosing the piece, then deciding what is good about the piece and what needs some work, after that you can describe in detail why you chose your medium and the meaning behind the piece. I did the portrait of my first dog, named Daisy. I got her when I was seven years old, when I first moved to North Carolina. She has been my best friend and stuck by my side since my family adopted her. I decided to make a stop motion video for my portrait piece to fully show how we interact and her personality. I didn't really like putting this piece together because I am a very symmetrical person, I like everything to be neat and organized and with this piece it was the exact opposite. If I had the chance to do this type of project again I wouldn't because it wasn't placed in a specific order or neatness. I didn't mind working on this project with another person, I just rather make my art myself, because I feel like it has more meaning and worth when it is just created by one person. When Ottilie and I were creating this piece she wanted to do blue items and I wanted to do purple, so what we decided to do was to split it in half and then combine the middle to make the piece completely come together.
My life has several important things that contribute into my life such as family, culture, and hobbies. In this piece I have shown my family with the Irish and American flag, since my entire family is Irish and I am the first person in my family to be born in the United States. I have shown my culture by painting the beach and the tie-dye because my family goes to the beach every Thanksgiving and we live a very chill lifestyle. I have also painted my hobbies in this piece by putting a coffee cup and the BMW logo because I am a coffee addict and I'm slightly obsessed with cars, and I drive a BMW. The most difficult thing with this project was deciding what to paint because I wasn't sure how I was going to relate it to my life, in the future I would change the materials and the objects that I painted with. With this project I found it most successful that I actually used puzzle pieces to describe parts of my life. (I was absent for the paint warm ups)
The inspiration for my design was fruit. I decided to try and print make fruit because of the shadows that represented and how you can pair colors together to make a nice contrast with the background. It was difficult to cut out the small sections on the block but to overcome this I microwaved the block to make it softer, and I used different size blades to cut different pieces away. If I was to re-do this project I would chose a more intense object and probably add more colors and layers into the lino block.
The theme for our locker was "beach vacation" so we decided to make it a beached theme locker. Lauren and I both love the beach so that was our main inspiration with our locker and we thought we could put a lot of effort into it. It was hard working in a small space such as the locker with dealing with proportions but we just tried to take everything that we wanted to incorporate and made it on a smaller scale. In our beach themed locker we used sharpie, construction paper, sand, and real life materials (barbie and shells). Lauren and I both really enjoyed working on this project.
My mentor is Ottilie Malesky. We talked about the different mediums we liked to use in our pieces and our favorite pieces of each other's art on the blogs. Their blog link is:
